Seal Pupping Season

Reproductive Cycle

Both seals and sea lions have a 12-month reproductive cycle, and 9-month gestation with a 3-month delayed implantation of the fertilized egg. They birth one pup a year.

For seals, copulation is underwater; birth is on land or in water. For sea lions, copulation is on land or in water, but birth is on land as pups can’t swim at birth.
